Young Finnish Design Oy is organizing together with Pohjanmaan Kaluste Oy a furniture design competition in order to find new product ideas for Pohjanmaan®´s collection. The aim of Young Finnish Design® is to combine young Finnish designers with manufacturers so that new Finnish design could be offered to consumers.
The aim of Pohjanmaan x Young Finnish Design furniture design competition is to find products for Pohjanmaan®´s collection which are suitable for manufacturing. The furniture needs to be functional or retro and fit into small spaces. During the design process you need to take into consideration that the products are meant for commercial use and suit for mass production. In this competition, commercialism means that the product suits for as many home interiors as possible so that the product idea could develop into a future classic.
Competition participants are recommended to get thoroughly acquainted with pohjanmaan.fi and luontofurniture.com websites and also Pohjanmaan® and Luonto Furniture social media channels in order to get to know Pohjanmaan®´s collection and production possibilities.
Pohjanmaan Kaluste Oy is operating in Finland and also in international markets. Their Pohjanmaan® collection can be found in all leading furniture retailers all over Finland. The company was founded in 1964 in Ostrobothnia and the family business is built on centuries long handcraft traditions. Pohjanmaan aims to minimize the ecological footprint of the products throughout their life cycle and to manufacture well designed, high quality and durable products. Products can also be custom made to match clients needs and wishes. Products are manufactured in Finland and in Estonia.
There are two categories:
1. 3-seater sofa
2. Dining set for 4
Competition product ideas/designs are meant for home interiors and to be elegant and tiny, functional or retro; 3-seater sofa and/or dining set for 4 (one dining table and one chair). For sofas, there are vast collections of fabric and leather options. The main materials for the dining set are birch, pine and oak.
*NOTE : You may participate in both categories with multiple proposals in each.
Delivering the competition material
The competition proposals need to be sent in digital format to firstname.lastname@example.org by 7th of June 2020 at 23.59 (compressed as zip file, max 10MB)

Returning the competition proposals
Competition organizer will not return competition proposals. Competition organizer is commited to destroy the digital material of competition proposals after the competition has ended. Competition organizer has no right to utilize any competition material deliverd by the participants without separate written agreement.
WINNERS & PRICES
In the competition there will be one winner from both categories and 2 honorary awards per category. The awards are in total 4000,00 € and are divided between the categories 2000,00 € for sofas and 2000,00 € for dining sets. Pohjanmaan Kaluste will choose the winners. There is no exemption from taxes for the awards.
Pohjanmaan Kaluste is one of the biggest manufacturers in Finland and they have wide sales channels in addition to Finland also abroad. In case the product idea would be chosen to be part of Pohjanmaan´s collection the designer would be mentioned together with the product and therefore also marketed alongside the product. Visibility and marketing are also significant values Pohjanmaan Kaluste can offer for a young designer who is in the beginning of his/her career.
The competition proposals are evaluated especially on following criteria:
Make sure to consider the potential for commercial use and competitive pricing of the product.
The competition timetable is from 11th of May until 7th of June 2020.
The winners will be notified personally by 18th of June 2020.
Announcing the winners
The winners will be announced 30th of June 2020.
Pohjanmaan x Young Finnish Design furniture design competition
Pohjanmaan Kaluste Oy and Young Finnish Design Oy organize Pohjanmaan x Young Finnish Design furniture design competition in cooperation. The competition is primarily targeted to young designers who are in the beginning of their career despite the age.
The aim of the competition is to find product design competition proposal according to the competition assignment. The competition aims to find products that would suit for Pohjanmaan Kaluste Oy´s manufacturing and collection.
Pohjanmaan x Young Finnish Design furniture design competition organized in Finland. Primarily the competition is targeted to design students and designers who are in the beginning of their career despite their age. You can participate if you are currently studying design/interior architecture/architecture/or to be an artisan in Finland or have recently graduated, or are studying/have studied design/interior architecture/ architecture/or to be an artisan in Finland as an exchange student. The participant does not need to have Finnish nationality. The competition languages are both Finnish, and English and the competition proposals can be either in Finnish or English. You may participate as an individual or as a team. Employees of the organizing companies may not participate.
Awarded design competition proposal needs to demonstrate high quality product design know-how. The selection emphasizes the functionality of the product(s). The award committee is focusing on industrial producibility of the products and suitability to mass production, adequate material choices, design, innovation in product design, manufacturing methods, durability of the product and clarity. You also need to take into consideration that the product would have potential for commercial use and competitive pricing.
Proposals that will be excluded from the competition are the ones that have been delivered after the deadline or are not equivalent to the instructions of the competition program. Exclusion of proposals are decided by the award committee.
In the competition there will be one winner from both categories and 2 honorary awards granted in both categories The awards are in total 4000,00 € and are divided between the categories, 2000,00 € for sofas and 2000,00 € for dining sets. The awards will be paid for the winners within one month after announcing the winners.
All immaterial property rights of the competition proposals belong to the designer/designers. In case there is a team participating in the competition, the persons in the team need to make a written agreement between each other about how the rights are divided between the team members.
The manufacturer taking part in the competition (Pohjanmaan Kaluste Oy) has the right to negotiate utilization, manufacturing, marketing and sale rights of the competition proposals with the designer/designers. Negotiations need to take place during two months after the results have been announced.
Participants assure that the proposal do not offend someone else´s rights according to the participants´ knowledge and is not a copy of any public design model. If the participant wants to protect his/her competition proposal, for example, with design model protection it is participant´s responsibility to do so.
By participating in the competition the participant gives the right for the organizers to use marketing material of the product ( for example images of the products in digital and printed form).
Agreement negotiations of utilization of awarded proposal will be held between designer/designers and the manufacturer taking part in the competition (Pohjanmaan Kaluste Oy).
Winners will be chosen by the representatives of Pohjanmaan Kaluste Oy Harri Pakka and Juha Koukkari. Award committee agrees to the competition program and the competition rules.
Representative of Young Finnish Design, Elisa Luoto operates as the competition representative. The task of the competition representative is to gather the competition proposals for the award committee and to answer inquiries concerning the competition. The nominated competition representative do not belong to the award committee and has no right to vote for winner(s).
The competition timetable, participation conduct, presentation requirements of the competition proposal(s), enrollment and award amounts of the competition are described in the competition program.
The competition organizers are responsible for the safety of the competition proposals after receiving them.
By participating in the competition the contestant approves the competition rules, the competition program, and the terms and obligations of the competition and also confirms that he/she owns all rights concerning the competition proposal.
Possible disagreements will be solved in cooperation with the award committee.
